    In Module 1 you learn about how it is to live with respiratory support. You will be introduced to Jørgen, Vanja and Øyvind and their thoughts about the development of the disease and their situation as users of assistive respiratory devices.

    Module 2 is, among other things, about how ventilation support can help the breath and how the machines that provide ventilation support work. You also get insight into different types of treatment and why being able to cough well is important.

    Many people who use respiratory support also need assistance in using the equipment and other devices. Module 3 is about how to ensure the best possible collaboration between user and assistant or helper.

    Course content

    This is an online course about long-term mechanical ventilation (LTMV) and how to use it. You will meet users of long-term mechanical ventilation and learn how they live good quality lives.

    Course certificate

    For the time being, a course certificate is only available in Norwegian.

    Target group

    The course is targeted at users, assistants, families and health personnel working within the municipal and specialist health services, who have little experience with breathing machine users.

    Academic content

    The academic content is divided into three modules and is built up of text, images, video clips, animation and links. User experiences are the common thread throughout the course.

    Learning outcomes

    Upon completion of the course, participants will have improved their competence about the following:

    • How to live a good life with long-term mechanical ventilation.
    • How to best take care of and accommodate the wants and needs of users.
    • How breathing machines work, which observations to make and action to take.
    • How to create trust and confidence during interaction between helpers and users.
    • Which action to take in an emergency.

    Literature

    Most of the literature used for the course has been taken from the National Professional Guidelines and Guide on Long-Term Mechanical Ventilation developed by the Norwegian Directorate of Health. In addition, the academic content has been developed based on the knowledge and experiences of experts and users (project group).

    Course financing

    The course was developed through the ‘Jeg puster - altså er jeg’ (I breathe, therefore I exist) project, which was about training in connection with long-term mechanical ventilation. The project was carried out from 2013-2014 and it was financed by five entities:
